Welcome
History: The Nutmeg Foundation was formed in 2001 as a private, independent foundation. The original Board members were Ethel Davis, J.M.K. Davis, James English, jr., and Edith Gengras.
Present Board Members, Ethel Davis, chair, Paul Tracey, treasurer, Sandra Wood Forand, secretary and Chris Hall.
Purpose: The purpose of the Foundation is to foster the acquisition of knowledge and skills which enable organizations and the individuals they serve to achieve their goals. Priority is given to organizations that enhance personal growth, independence and self-sufficiency.
Funding Guidelines: Grants are awarded for organizational improvement and program development to non-profits whose target audience includes adults, families or teenagers. Of special interest is the funding of a consultant or specialist to answer critical questions relating to program, the Board, the mission or the future direction of the non-profit. The Foundation considers stand-alone projects as well as a portion of a larger project. The Foundation is also interested in funding collaborative efforts. Examples of past funding include: strategic planning, technology training, program evaluations and organizational communication.
Process: Funding begins in January of each year with an RFP (request for proposal) letter sent to 10 or more non-profits in the Greater Hartford area. Proposals are reviewed in April, site visits are conducted in May and grants are awarded in June. In most cases an operating grant is included with each award. In the fall the Board reviews community needs and recommends Impact Grants. All applications are now being processed through a cloud based system and applicants will be given contact information when they are invited to apply.
Limitations: The Foundation does not accept unsolicited applications and no grants are awarded to individuals, government units or religious institutions unless programs benefit the community at large nor are they made for political activities, loans or multi-year commitments. Eligibility requirements include a Tax Exempt 501C3 status.
